Alternative Trade Networks for Coffee
John Thackara of Worldchanging writes about Alternative Trade Networks and the Coffee System. In the article, he reviews the book Confronting the Coffee Crisis: Fair Trade, Sustainable Livelihoods and Ecosystems in Mexico and Central America (Food, Health, and the Environment). It’s an interesting read with a few unknown facts (to me) :
- it can take as many as eight transactions to bring the coffee to market
- coffee farmers receive less than two percent of the price of a cup of coffee sold in a coffee bar
We hardly ever think about the people who produce the coffee that we enjoy every day. The article (and the book) is great food for thought which should guide us to make more responsible choices in our next coffee purchase.
