Advancing Sustainability in the Coffee Supply Chain
Social Innovations Conversations has a very interesting podcast on advancing sustainability in the coffee supply chain. In a panel discussion, three people discuss how the US$55 billion coffee industry handles major sustainability issues on the economic, social and environmental levels.
The panelists are :
* Tracy Ging, Director of Marketing and Communication, Coffee Quality Institute
* Dennis Macray, Manager Corporate Social Responsibility, Starbucks Coffee Company
* Steve Sellers, Chief Operating Officer, Transfair
The topics discussed :
- What are the benefits of Fairtrade and Organic certifications?
- Should consumers pay premium prices?
- What are the opportunities and challenges facing coffee retailers in managing their supply chain to ensure their sustainability?
- What are the economic tradeoffs involved in pursuing sustainable practices?
One notable fact was that when the prices of coffee went to an all-time low of 20 cents per pound, Starbucks paid $1 premium over that price to help sustain the quality and livelihood of the coffee producers.
